Congressman Rubén Hinojosa on Honoring our Veterans on this Veterans Day 11-11-11

Statement

Date: Nov. 10, 2011
Issues: Veterans

Throughout America's history, our veterans have fought to protect the freedoms we hold dear. Every year, to commemorate the end of World War I, we take this time as a nation to celebrate America's veterans for their willingness to serve and to recognize the sacrifices they have made.

It is our duty to ensure veterans know that we appreciate the sacrifices they have made to protect our liberties. On Veterans Day, Friday, November 11, 2011, I plan to attend a Veterans Day ceremony at the Catholic War Veterans Building in Weslaco, Texas at 11:00 a.m. That same evening, I will also participate in the annual Veterans Day Parade in my hometown of Mercedes, Texas at 5:30 p.m. I encourage everyone in the 15th Congressional District of Texas to participate in honoring our Veterans in your communities.

While it is particularly important to commemorate our veterans on this important observance, there are ways to support veterans at any time of the year. These include:

* Volunteer to help veterans. Put your unique talents to work by volunteering at a local Veterans Affairs Medical Center. The VA Voluntary Service Office can provide you information on how to volunteer locally.

* Display the American flag. Express your national pride and fly our nation's flag. And if you would like to order an American flag that has flown over the United States Capitol, please contact my office.

* Find out how you can help First Lady Michelle Obama's initiative Joining Forces, an effect to honor service members and their families with service of your own. So far nearly 9 million volunteer hours have been pledged.

I want to extend my deepest thanks to all who have served or are currently serving in our Armed Forces. If you or your family has any questions about veterans' issues, please contact my office.
